The Ballina Men’s Shed has been an integral part of the community since 2011, originally housed within the Southern Cross K-12 School with the support of the Baptist Church.
Initial Struggles and Land Acquisition
When the Ballina Men’s Shed had to vacate their initial premises, they approached the Ballina Shire Council for a land grant, seeking either Crown or Community land. The Ballina Racecourse initially offered land but changed the location several times before finally withdrawing their offer. This instability led to the expiration of their funding grants due to a lack of progress, and the funds had to be returned.
Finding a Permanent Home
With the support of the Church, they gained access to a deceased estate on Fisheries Creek Road. They collaborated with the council to develop the site, successfully applying for grants and receiving substantial funding. They garnered support from several state and federal government officials and received pro bono assistance from the civil engineering firm Ardill Payne for the DA and design of the Shed.
Successful Development and Community Impact
The shed was eventually built and is now equipped with an impressive array of tools and resources. It is well-managed and operated, boasting over 100 members, with more than 30 attending daily to work on various projects. The perseverance and success of the Ballina Men’s Shed, supported by the council and other stakeholders, have enabled them to make a significant contribution to the community.
